For this assignment you should select an output (good or service) associated with the built
environment and supplied by an organisation of your choice as a Case Study. This can be an
organisation you work for or one with which you are familiar.
You should assume that this organisation has a Senior Leadership Team and produces a quarterly
in-house magazine.
The Senior Leadership Team of your Case Study organisation are concerned about the lack of
knowledge and understanding of economics within their workforce. To improve this, they have
begun to include articles about economics in the quarterly in-house magazine to improve the
economic awareness of their staff.
The Senior Leader responsible for the magazine knows that you are currently studying economics
at UCEM and has asked you to write an article for the next edition.
Task
Write a suitable article for publication in the in-house magazine of your Case Study organisation.
Your article should explain important Microeconomic ideas and apply them to a company output of
your choice. Your article should be written using Microsoft Word (or similar) word processing
software. Suggested word counts are given for each section.
Your article must:
a. Summarise the key features of your chosen output, explaining where demand for the
output comes from, and the opportunity costs for those who purchase it (approx. 300
words).
b. Explain the factors of production for your chosen output, including information about which
factors are the scarcest (approx. 400 words).
c. Describe the principles of Demand, Supply and Market Equilibrium (approx. 250 words).
d. Identify of the key Demand and Supply Factors in the market for your output (approx. 300
words).
e. Explain, with reasons, the likely changes in demand and supply over the next 12 months,
and the impact this will have on the Market Equilibrium point (approx. 350 words).
f. Describe the four main market structures, and an explanation of which structure best
describes the market for your output (approx. 300 words).
g. Analyse, using the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) framework, the
current market position of your output (approx. 600 words).
h. Include, as an Appendix, key information about your chosen organisation (not included in
the word count).
