Ethical Issues in Psychological Research
Procedure
Select one of the following classic studies in psychology.
1. Review Chapter 3 of the e-text and Unit 4 of the Study Guide, which discusses the ethical principles in psychological research.
2. Select one of the following classic studies in psychology.
a)Milgram, S. (1963). Behavioral study of obedience. Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology, 67 (4), 371-378. doi: 10.1037/h0040525.
b) Rosenthal, R., & Jacobson, L. (1966). Teachers’ expectancies: Determinants of pupils’ I.Q. gains. (Temporarily unavailable)
c) Rosenhan, D. L. (1973, January 19). On being sane in insane places. Science, 179, 250-258.

4. Write a paper (3 to 5 pages, double-spaced) that addresses the following: Identify and describe briefly two ethical issues in this classic study. Discuss how, by today’s standard, these ethical principles were violated. These ethical principles can be based on the APA code (as described in the textbook) or the CPA code (as described in Unit 4 of the Study Guide).
1.Suggest changes to research procedures that could be implemented to alleviate these ethical concerns.
2.In your opinion, do the benefits of this study outweigh the costs? Give reasons for your answer.
