There are two sections to this assessment:
The first part (a) is an essay on the subject of tissue engineering, naming two of the current named applications like e.g skin, bone, heart analyse the current research themes.
WORD COUNT:2500 – A general introduction at around 500 words then for each of the 2 chosen systems (applications) at around 1000 words.
for your 2 chosen systems – first, introduce the body system, then talk about disease, then say why tissue engineering could be a useful approach, before saying what problems are being encountered in developing a tissue engineering approach and how researchers are trying to overcome them. Remember to include aspects of critical appraisal throughout.
There is an excellent text book you can (which is the core text for this module). It contains lots of information on how tissue engineering is being used to treat a variety of diseases, It is called “Principles of Tissue Engineering” and the first author is R.P. Lanza:
second part (b) using the document submitted about the practical done in lessons you can see what methodologies have been used in the laboratories to make the scaffolds for the use of tissue engineering. WORD COUNT: 500
There are some slides on the techniques to monitor how cells are coping with a scaffold (for part b of your assignment). Please refer to the scaffolds lecture for info on how scaffolds can be made.
BOTH PARTS (a) and (b) NEED TO HAVE THEIR OWN INTRODUCTION AND CONCLUSIONS.
** But a brief one for part (b) as it’s only short like a sentence or two for opening and the closing.**
