Directions: For this prompt, you will write an essay of approximately 5,000 characters (2 typed pages) in the text box provided,* based on the passages you have read and annotated prior to class. You may use the space below to brainstorm and to create an outline for your essay. You will type your response below and submit it for a 100-point writing grade.
(* For the actual MCAS test which you will take online, you will be asked to type your answer in a text box. We will review this at a later date.) For this MCAS-style essay, I will give you the opportunity to peer edit before submitting your final draft on GC and turnitin.com. You must, however, follow the 5,000 character limit, as required by MCAS. Please check your essay for accurate word count by highlighting just the essay portion of your document and going to Tools>Word Count>Character Count to see the final character count. Please write and highlight
the final character count on your essay at the end of the document.
Your writing should:
• Present and develop a central idea/thesis.
• Provide evidence and/or details from the passage(s).
• Use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Based on the excerpts from 1984 by George Orwell and The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, write an essay that explains the potential conflicts that people who live in these settings might encounter. Be sure to use information from both texts to develop your essay.
Just complete the two body paragraphs not the intro or conclusion paragraphs. Each body paragraph should include three direct quotes or developing details to support the thesis and each developing detail or direct quote should have a lead in and analysis. Use the first document below to help understand the structure of the essay and then use the 1984 and the jungle excerpts for evidence to use in the body paragraphs.
