1. Read Gonzalez, Chapters 4 & 5, and complete written responses to the following
study questions:
Chapter 4, “The High Point of the Middle Ages” a. Describe the Crusades—What were they? When were they? Where did they happen? Who was involved? How did each crusade end? L)61/4i b. Briefly describe scholasticism and a few of its leaders and movements. c. What were the main contributions of humanism to the study and interpretation of the Bible?
Chapter 5, “The Late Middle Ages”
a. Describe the Great Western Schism—What was it? When did it occur? Whom did it involve? How did it end?
b. Briefly describe three of the early reformers. Who were they, what did they do, and what did they believe?
Briefly describe the Mystic Movement of the Late Middle Ages.
2. Read McGrath (Overview and Case Studies), Chapter 3, and complete a written response to the ollowing stay question:
Chapter 3, “The Reformation and Post-Reformation Periods, 1500- 1750”
a. What were the main achievements of the Council of Trent?
. b. What’s the main difference between Lutheran theology and Calvinist
(Reformed) theology?
c. Describe Luther’s views on justification, including his definitions of “faith” and “the righteousness of God.” How does Luther differ from Augustine’s view? From Calvin’s? From the Catholic view?
3. Read excerpt from “Disputation of Doctor Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences” in the Course Pack._ 11— _ 4. Which Chapter 3 case study did you find most intriguing and why? Be prepared to share your decision in class.
