Tell how you used the library databases to locate high-quality sources of information on a topic that interests you.
The Process:
Start with a broad field of study—your major or minor, or an academic field that interests you—and use the library’s website to identify two databases that provide access to articles in that field.
Reminder: for all online access to library resources:
Username = your ID#. Password = 5555
Think of a more specific topic, issue, or problem within that field of study and search each database for articles on that topic or issue. You may have to search using several different keywords and/or combinations of keywords before you find what you’re looking for.
Read at least one article from each database on that topic. These should be full-length articles that reflect original research (look for lots of source citation), not just reviews, editorials, or informal pieces.
The Writing Assignment:
Write a one-to-two (1-2) page account of your process of discovery. How did you decide which databases to use? What kinds of keywords did you use in your search? What kinds of obstacles or difficulties did you encounter, and how did you overcome them? What kind of information did you ultimately gain in your search? (You may use first-person pronouns in this assignment.) Then briefly summary of each article that you read from the database. Attach a works-cited page that lists the two articles that you summarized.
