Purpose: What does it mean to compare and contrast?
The purpose of a compare and contrast essay is to examine ways in which certain things or ideas are similar to (this is the comparison) and/or different from (this is the contrast) one another.
By comparing and contrasting ideas or topics, you are drawing connections between them and thinking about them in a new way. This leads to thinking critically. When you compare and contrast, you should look beyond the obvious to understand the relationships between the two ideas and what is important about them.
