Description
A ‘Briefing Paper’, offering an overview of the development of transitional justice
both as a concept that has given rise to a distinct field of enquiry in its own right
and as a set of processes, or initiatives, which societies emerging from periods of
civil conflict and/or authoritarian rule have engaged in an attempt to deal with the
legacy of their past. Your briefing paper should outline the main aims and
objectives that have come to characterise this field, the issues that it seeks to
address, and the key challenges that have been faced by those working within the
field. You should identify the variety of different types of contexts within which
transitional justice measures have been employed, as well as the range of
mechanisms/processes (judicial, non-judicial, and quasi-judicial) that have been
engaged, indicating where future work in this area might be most urgently
required.
