This essay will discuss the reception of classical myth in either “Jason and the Argonauts” (1963) or “Clash of the Titans” (1981). You must write about these versions of the films in question (versus, for example, the newer “Clash of the Titans”).
These films are available to stream for free through the Tulane Library website. With a Chrome browser (Safari seems not to work), click “Resources” on the main page, then “Audio + Video,” then “Streaming Resources Guide,” then “Swank Digital Campus,” then log in with your Tulane username and password and search for the 1981 “Clash of the Titans” or 1963 “Jason and the Argonauts.”
Some things to think about as you develop your topic:
Think about what version of the myth is being adapted and what ancient texts we have read (or will read) that treat that myth. Does the filmmaker seem to have an agenda? If so, does it differ from that of the ancient authors who treated that myth? What are the contexts of this film adaptation (historical, literary, cultural, religious, etc.)? Does the filmmaker seem to have an audience(s) in mind?
