Hamlet is constantly in a dilemma on “how to act”. Hamlet compares himself (directly and indirectly) to three other characters who have reacted in contrasting ways to a similar situation: the loss of a father. Discuss Hamlet in relation to each of the following characters and make sure to bring in some specifics from Acts 4-5 of Hamlet by William Shakespeare. What type of action does each of the following characters engage in and why? How and/or when does Hamlet resemble each of these following three characters–1) Fortinbras, Jr.; 2) Ophelia; 3) Laertes–in Hamlet’s own behavior? When (in the text) and why does Hamlet compare himself to these characters or “foils”? Please use direct lines from Acts 4 and 5 to show evidence to support your answer.
