Using 12-font Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins, students must submit a 5-7
page, typed and double-spaced research paper addressing one of the following topics : (1) a comparative analysis of two different styles of jazz (e.g., cool vs. bebop, swing vs. Dixieland, etc.); (2) a historical survey of a particular instrument’s use within a certain
style of jazz; (3) a general critique of the contemporary jazz scene including popular
performers, styles, etc.; (4) the relationship between jazz and social politics within a
specific period or stylistic movement; (5) the fusion of jazz with other musical cultures in
the world. As a research paper, each work must include a references cited page with
