CASE STUDY of dam removal and fisheries management. Go to the American Rivers website and download the Dam Removal Database (also attached):
Once you’ve downloaded the database, find a state of interest from the list. Choose 3-5 dams in that state and then investigate each dam and prepare a summary of the dams, their original purposes, current status, and potential for removal. Then, determine the fish species (by both common and scientific name) impacted by these dams and expound on their status, trends, etc., and how dam removal would benefit those species.
In closing, make your recommendations as to the benefits of dam removal – be specific – identify which dams are highest priority for removal and why. Summarize your student learning point in the final paragraph.
