For the purposes of this class, do not read Multiple Rule Patterns. It is great information but highly linguistic in nature and I don’t teach this course from that perspective. It gets into a lot of important language rules but I feel it can be overwhelming when paired with everything else I will cover, so please skip pages 115-118.
discussion guideline – format: Think of this more as an essay or blog as opposed to a typical discussion post. I usually include a suggested length in the discussion guidelines but in general, no less than 3 paragraphs should be written for each initial post. Make sure to address all sections and all prompts in your discussion post.
As you read it imagine that you are about to enter this culture and answer the following 2 questions:
1. What is the most “shocking” part about this culture to you?
2. Given the words used to describe this culture, what assumptions might you make about this culture? What do you think the people who identify with this culture are like? And what specific words or phrases lead you to make these assumptions?
Any guesses as to which culture is being described in this article?
