Maternity care has changed considerably over the years, and research demonstrates that a natural approach to child birth and pregnancy results in more favourable outcomes for both the mother and child. However, despite the call for more natural approach to maternity care, epidemiological statistics highlight an increase in the prevalence of pregnant women with associated co-morbidities, such as, the rise in number of pregnant mothers with diabetes . In response, more complex and multidisciplinary care packages are required and as a consequence, nurses from all specialities need to ensure they have the knowledge to treat pregnant and postnatal women .
