In the Romantic era, E.T.A. Hoffmann’s work influenced both Hawthorne and Poe. Craft an analytical essay that compares the gothic elements in Hoffmann’s “The Sandman” to those in either Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” or any one or more of the Poe stories we’ve read.
Analyze the characters and themes in each and explore what’s similar about Hoffman to Hawthorne/Poe and what the latter author does differently. Be sure to indicate which elements of Hawthorne’s or Poe’s stories you feel were influenced by Hoffmann. Include passages from the texts when supporting your point. You’ll also be required to provide a brief overview of Romanticism using at least one external scholarly source .
