Gustav Mahler wrote 9 epic symphonies — large works involving big orchestras. Think of them like long novels. The first time I listened to any Mahler symphony, I didn’t get it. They were too long and massive. I didn’t have the attention span, nor the experience. But this class is an opportunity for you to give things a try. I think the point is to see if you can get something out of the listening experience. It’s best to give the music multiple listens also. By the way, I’m finding that music is a great companion during these times.
● Listen to these 2 videos.
Here’s one performance by the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen . This is the complete last movement of the symphony, shot in a more conventional symphony performance production.
Now, listen to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s virtual performance of the 6th movement.
● After listening, answer the question below.
How is the experience of the two videos different? Does one help you get into it more? Of course, everyone has been affected by COVID-19, but many people are not sitting idly by, but choosing to be proactive. Maybe this video might inspire something in you as well. I don’t want to sit by to wait around. I think the bigger picture here, at least for me, is that there are still many things in my control and many things i can still do. How have you adapted your life, improved your habits, and set yourself as a positive force for the people around you?
