The glittering lights and promise of striking it rich have encouraged people to relocate to Las Vegas for decades. What was once an easy place to score a job with a pension and guaranteed a family of stability has become a cold and disconnected place. The many people who moved to Las Vegas hoping to live in the fast-paced, ritzy lifestyle of Sin City have suffered since the hit of the recession in 2008, most of them have never recovered.
Seeing as though it is now illegal to be homeless in Las Vegas, the problem has reached a new problem. The homeless are now retreating into the tunnels which brings a new concern due to the danger of living underground. There are little to no resources for the homeless community and the people who are affected most are the homeless themselves, the city can and should do better to help these people with the tools necessary to get back on their feet.
The challenge in solving this problem is space and jobs. One of the ways I think the city could implement a change is to use some of the city’s federal funding to build more shelters or housing units for the homeless. Also, the city could hire a lot of the homeless to pick up trash or maintain the city’s landscaping and litter divisions. Most of the inner-city parks are in bad shape and could use maintenance staff on a regular basis. Also, many of our state agency businesses like social services or the DMV are always short-staffed and could always use help. We could offer the newly transitioned individuals training for these jobs and have them use a portion of their salary to give back to the very programs that helped them.
This week’s reading and learning activities helped me to create a statement that I’m sure needs work. But for a start my is: Las Vegas locals need support, using our federal funding to support lives instead of businesses should be on everyone’s agenda.
