Approximately 40-60% of people who commit suicide have alcohol in their system at autopsy and about 10% of persons with substance use disorders commit suicide. In about 86% of homicides, 60% of sex offenses, 37% of physical assaults, and 30% of child abuse cases the perpetrator was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the offense. Also, alcohol is involved in more than half of all boating accidents and 40-67% fire related fatalities. Despite these statistics, alcohol is often perceived to be a more mild or safer substance. What are your thoughts about these issues?
