ASSIGNMENT
You are the Dean of a college of education in a prominent university that has programs to prepare teachers among others. The teacher preparation program has been relatively stable for the last 20 years: the curriculum has remained about the same, most of the instruction occurs in traditional classroom settings, there is an active internship program in the fourth year of the program that places pre-service teachers in nearby schools under the tutelage of experienced public school teachers, and there is a standardized state-wide exam that graduating teachers must pass in order to complete the teacher certification process. The State Board of Education recently convened a meeting with all of the provosts and education deans in the various state colleges and universities to pass along disappointing data with regard to retention of new teachers, performance of students on state-mandated standardized tests, and misuse/disuse of new educational technologies purchased at significant expense in the last two years. The Board of Education has been tasked by the governor to propose changes to improve the situation, and the Board is now asking the various provosts and deans for specific recommendations about what can be done to improve this situation in college and university teacher preparation programs.
1. Identify and describe the key factors that you would consider in framing your response to the problem situation stated above.
2. Identify and describe the key factors that are likely to be obstacles in implementing the effort.
3. Indicate and describe the relationships among all the key factors that have been identified.
4. Indicate what kinds of additional support should be considered in order to make the best case for your solution approach.
5. Create an annotated concept map that reflects the things indicated in response to the previous four tasks
