Supplement A: Publication Bias in Systematic Reviews
The article chosen reflects the bias that is seen in systematic reviews. While reading this article it became very evident that there are many forms of bias that I had not been educated on previously. The overarching bias seen in systematic reviews is dissemination bias. This bias specifically occurs when the study’s results are dependent on the strength of the findings (Polit & Beck, 2021, p. 30-1). One form of this bias that caught my attention is the outcome reporting. This form of bias is incomplete and favors the reporting of outcomes that provide significant results (Polit & Beck, 2021, p.30-1). While conducting research, I could see how this form of bias could be done. It is always favorable to utilize significant results when trying to strengthen the data found in order to persuade the reader. Furthermore, it was noted that because of publication bias with a null hypothesis the data may be disproportionate which can lead to overestimation of effects if they are only included in a meta-analysis (Polit & Beck, 2021, p.30-1). With this being said, strategies to detect publication bias have been utilized. These include the fail-safe number and the trim and fill number. Both of these tests I was not familiar with being implemented in addressing bias. It is imperative that publication bias be identified and eradicated in order to provide sound and competent data.
- Systematic reviews compile findings from multiple primary research reports on a topic with an effort to limit bias (Owens, 2021). These reviews will be utilized in my research to support the data that has been collected. Systematic reviews undergo rigorous review and require that the data be reproducible which aids in providing reliable, trusted, and quality data. More specifically, these reviews will help illustrate the statistical significance of the improper use of prescription antibiotics. Furthermore, it aids in the methodical approach I will be taking to collect and discuss my research findings.
