ASSIGNMENT
1. Compare public spaces in a city like New York with those in suburbs. Reference Jane Jacobs’
and William Whyte’s respective definitions of good public space, Setha Low’s argument about
the restriction and privatization of space in suburbs, and other relevant texts.
2. Explain how redevelopment in Los Angeles and San Diego has changed public use of and
access to urban space. How does redevelopment and the relationship between property and
public space affect the homeless? Discuss Mike Davis’s argument about the loss of true,
democratic public space, Margaret Crawford’s account of how the homeless challenge
definitions of public space, and other relevant texts.
