Mythology in Art & Literature
Choose any 4 (four) paintings from 4 different artists from the Medieval Period
to Enlightenment Period. This is a time period from about 600 CE to 1800 CE and you
may pick any paintings found throughout this time period. Your choices are unlimited ( I have already chosen)
Give background information on the artist.
Explain the story of the painting. (This is the story about the subjects within the
painting itself, not how the painting came into being. Example: The Last Supper by
Leonardo da Vinci is about Christ and his last meeting with the disciples. Of course you
would put much more into the explanation please.)
➢ Define the symbolism within each painting. For example, the meaning of the
positioning of the subjects, the colors, animals etc. Also, don’t just write what you have
found by researching the painting.
➢ Define the archetypes within the painting. You need to explain how and why
they fit the archetype and not simply list them.
➢ Please include a copy of the painting. (Black and white is fine.) Please give me
a picture larger than a thumbnail sized picture but save your ink.
➢ Please set this up as four individualized projects. Do not lump the information
together. (For example, when giving background on the artist, do not list all the artists
together so I have to mix and match. Separate each painting into individualized projects)
➢ The more diverse your project is, the better your grade
