Unit title & code | Applied Health Psychology PSY012-3 |
Assignment number and title | Assessment 2 – Individual report of a proposal for a health intervention |
Assessment type | Written Report |
Weighting of assessment | 85% |
Unit learning outcomes | 1. Display a critical appreciation of the role that theoretically driven interventions can play in the remit of positive health behaviour change
2. Demonstrate the ability to effectively convey to an audience a critically appraised proposal for a public health intervention using effective visual techniques and engagement strategies. |
What am I required to do in this assignment? |
For your second point of assessment in this unit you are asked to individually write an ethically sound health intervention proposal. The proposal must consider in detail the background and need for the proposed intervention (drawn from relevant literature), ethical issues and/or limitations, methodological issues surrounding such as proposal and suggested evaluation. The relevance of public health policy to the health of the nation, and the contribution the field of health psychology can have, will be assessed throughout the proposal.
Reports need to have the following structure and content in order to meet the outcomes being assessed (i.e. Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation).
The written report will have five main parts: 1. Title The title of your intervention should be appropriate and informative, clearing outlining the purpose of the intervention.
2. Introduction You must provide background information on the health issue to be addressed to include related research and/or policy. State explicitly the rationale for your proposed intervention along with a clear outline of its aims. You should provide a strong justification for the proposed intervention based on a critical evaluation of interventions that have been used previously in your chosen area. Previous intervention work in your proposed area should be included with reference to relevant theoretical models and recent findings from peer-reviewed journals. Research questions and hypotheses must be appropriately framed and must be derived from the research literature.
3. Method You should provide details of your proposed design, participants, materials, and procedures. Provide a clear justification for sample selection, strategy and size. The procedure should be clear and detailed. In addition you must provide a realistic account of the predicted intervention process linked to theory and taxonomy. You must also illustrate that you have considered any relevant ethical and legal issues. Finally you must outline who you think will fund the proposal and why they are an appropriate choice.
4. Evaluation You must outline your data analysis strategy and clearly explain how you will know if the intervention has worked. Consider possible outcomes and the implications to the health of the nation.
5. Implementation issues (What are the potential limitations of the intervention and how might these be addressed? Is it cost-effective?) You must give an overview of the practical and methodological issues surrounding the implementation of the intervention. In doing so you should provide a thorough overview of how potential obstacles to implementation can be planned for and overcome.
REFERENCES These must be comprehensive and adhere to APA conventions. You should include citations for all information. Each citation should have a corresponding reference in the reference section. The Reference section should not have references that were not cited in the text.
PRESENTATION Your report should be written in grammatical English allowing a clear flow of argument the reader can readily understand.
Please note :The feedback you receive on your presentation will be vital when writing your report. Make sure you address all the comments you receive from tutors and reflect on any issues raised by the review panel.
Although this assessment is based on your group presentation from assessment 1, it is essential that you ensure that this written proposal is your own work written in your own words. At this stage you should no longer be working in a group.

What do I need to do to pass? (Threshold Expectations from UIF) |
Identify the theoretical underpinnings of health interventions and to discuss their strengths and limitations.
Show a coherent understanding of the principles underlying socio-cognitive models of behaviour change. Identify and source appropriate literature, including recent findings from peer-reviewed journals. Critically evaluate previous interventions designed to encourage positive health behaviour change in a selected health domain (e.g. health risk behaviour, health screening). Show insight into the ethical, methodological, and practical issues that impact on translating research into practice. Articulate how interventions informed by theories and models of Health Psychology can contribute to the health of the nation. Outline how the proposed intervention can be evaluated to determine its effectiveness in promoting positive health behaviour change. Produce an individually written report of the public health intervention developed collaboratively with peers. |
How do I produce high quality work that merits a good grade? |
We will discuss assessment 1 in detail during the tutorial on 3.4.2019
|
How does assignment relate to what we are doing in scheduled sessions? |
The assignment directly relates to the applied nature of the unit and the unit content. Theoretical models will be discussed and we will focus on behaviour change and how to foster health enhancing behaviours and change/prevent maladaptive behaviours. The tutorials will focus on the skills required for the assignment, such as coding previous interventions to identify behaviour change techniques, working on presentation skills and report writing. The assessment is designed to allow you to relate the contents of the course (the various theories, models and general approaches to health beliefs and behaviours) to the design of a health intervention. |
How will my assignment be marked? |
Your assignment be marked according to the threshold expectations and the criteria on the following page.
You can use them to evaluate your own work and estimate your grade before you submit.

Lower 2nd – 50-59% | Upper 2nd – 60-69% | 1st Class – 70%+ | |
1 | The title is generally fine and provides general information on the proposed intervention. | The title is good and provides a clear insight into the nature of the proposed intervention. | An excellent title. It is succinct and very clearly illustrates the purpose of the proposed intervention |
2 | The theoretical framework selected is mostly relevant to the intervention and there is evidence that the theory has been understood. There may still be irrelevant parts or areas where the content is unclear | The report’s theoretical content is generally accurate, well informed and relevant showing the topic has been understood. | An excellent overview of the theoretical framework that informs your intervention. The theoretical content of the report is highly relevant to the area chosen and a discursive/evaluative element makes it clear that the theory has been understood. |
3 | There is some evidence of consideration of design and ethical issues but there is a need to expand on the issues presented. | Good consideration of range of design and ethical issues.
Good overview of how issues might be addressed. |
Excellent consideration of design and ethical issues alongside a thorough overview of how potential obstacles to implementation and evaluation can be planned for and overcome. |
4 | There is some evidence of consideration of evaluation issues but there is a need to expand on the issues presented. Some errors in planned analysis. | Good consideration of range of evaluation issues.
Good overview of how analysis will be conducted.
|
Excellent consideration of evaluation issues alongside a thorough overview of analysis strategies. Outcomes clearly linked to health of the nation. |
5 | There is some evidence of consideration of implementation issues but there is a need to expand on the issues presented.
|
Good consideration of range of implementation issues.
Good overview of how issues might be addressed. |
Excellent consideration of implementation issues alongside a thorough overview of how potential obstacles to implementation can be planned for and overcome. |
