Minimum of three sources, including the primary source (the image you are discussing) and at least two additional sources (such as background information about the artist/organization/era/situation/use of color, etc.). You may use more than these three required sources, but you must use at least three!
For your second major writing assignment, select a print advertisement, propaganda poster, public-service campaign, painting, photograph, or similar published visual work that you believe is trying to persuade the audience(s) to embrace a particular viewpoint or conform to a specific, recommended behavior. Then, write a three-to-five-page paper (including a works-cited page and the visual) which identifies and assesses this visual argument’s persuasiveness. Specifically, what is this visual’s message and/or purpose, and how convincing is it? Who created or commissioned this piece? For whom is it intended? To what audience(s) does it appeal and why? What elements in this visual support its central idea? What persuasive appeals does this image incorporate? What rhetorical strategies and devices does it employ? How effective is this visual argument at swaying its audience? What changes might make this work even more compelling? What was your initial reaction to this piece? Now that you have considered this image in greater detail, has your reaction changed? If so, how, and why do you feel differently about this piece? If not, what specific element has particularly helped to solidify your perspective?
