Case Study:
Kay is an aspiring 400-meter track athlete who has read various nutrition books in hopes of finding the ideal diet for her sport. From her reading, she has learned that fats yield more calories per gram than carbohydrates. In addition, she knows that dietary proteins are needed to help her muscles recover from training and can also be used for energy. She is now convinced that one of the popular high-fat, high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets is the best diet for her. Her coach disagrees with her decision. She recommends that Kay speak with a sports nutrition professional. She currently weighs 125 pounds and is 5’7” tall and is 17 years old. Often times, Kay completes practice from 3-4:30 PM afterschool. Training often involves running form drills, plyometrics, strength training and speed-work on 2 days. On strictly running days, the pace challenges and running sets can vary but the cumulative mileage over a practice will never exceed 4 miles.
- Explain to Kay why she should or should not follow this new diet; be sure you also link your answer into specific principles of energy metabolism.
- Create a daily CHO plan using a TABLE format. Include calculations for the total CHO needs (g/kg) on the day at the top (hint: be sure this aligns with her activity level). Then, break it down into an eating schedule which reflects at least 4 feedings over a day. Please provide:
- Time of feeding
- Gram/kg goal for the feeding
- Example food choices for the feeding
- Grams of CHO each food choice contributes to the feeding goal
- Technology: There are multiple technologies to assist in food tracking. One example is My Fitness Pal. [https://www.myfitnesspal.com/]. Besides this example provided, research another nutrition resource you think could help Kay. Describe the resource and why it may assist her.
