Using the historical newspaper database, find reports of white racial violence elsewhere in the U.S. that occurred between 1890 and 1960 and analyze the features that were similar to and different from the episodes examined in the Phillips’ text. Offer a comparative analysis that reflects a clear understanding of not only the events in Forsyth but the author’s insights about those events. Some of the questions you should consider are: What were the stated reasons for the violence? What was the tone of the coverage – sympathetic to or critical of the violence? What happened to the perpetrators? To what extent did the coverage reflect or critique the

Newspapers. You will now be able to do an all-in-one primary source database search in four longstanding national newspapers of wide circulation (the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and
Washington Post).
Once you have clicked into the database, click “Advanced search” at the top of the page.
In the main search box, I suggest you type the keywords: race violence lynching.
In the “Publication date” box, narrow your search by clicking “Specific date range.”
As specified above, search 1890 to 1960.
In the “Document type” box, check articles, commentary, editorials, letters to the
editor.
In your essay text, when referring to each newspaper story, be certain to include the relevant basic details (newspaper title, article title, place and date of the event being reported).
Your essay should be typed and double-spaced, with 1” margins and no larger than 12-point font. As is standard practice in the discipline of History, you must use footnotes for attributions and include a bibliography.
