Company Overview

Ray Waste (RW) is a public utility company that provides management of wastewater and other environmental services. The company used to be part of the nationalized water industry but was privatized in the early 2000s.

The company is constantly under scrutiny not only from its shareholders and customers, but also from the Regulators, Health and Safety Executives (HSE) and other environmental pressure groups that want to ensure that RW meets all its statutory responsibilities.

RW currently operates by having several different profits making business streams, e.g. Engineering, Environment Management, Water Quality, Overseas operations etc. The major profits (and overheads) are in Engineering (RWE) side of the business. The Engineering business alone currently employs 5643 members of staff primarily in three locations India (1106), United Kingdom (1623) and the United States (2914).

The company’s logical infrastructure operates locally with only one server each. Digital communications between these are primarily based through public networks. Because RWE was a merger of organization in these locations, they have continued to operate their ICT resources independently. Furthermore, the rapid growth over the last decade has extremely stretched the ICT department.

RWs Group Board of Directors have realized the inefficiency and the incurred costs due to lack of technological needs at RWE to fulfil contractual agreements with both suppliers and customers.

RW wishes to continue business and has decided to digitally transform its current disjoint Engineering businesses technology into a sound, reliable and acceptable ICT Infrastructure. After several months of negotiation the budget agreed for the development of the ICT Infrastructure is with a Capital budget of £215k and annual expense budget of £96k (excludes salaries).

You are employed as an Enterprise IT Development Manager, you are dedicated to the development of this project, and have been made aware of the following:

1. The capital budget cannot include the physical infrastructure, as all locations have the capability of enterprise Local Area Networking inclusive of wireless networking, four public routes and two firewalls.
2. All server and client hardware should be the preferred product range either from IBM, Lenovo, HP and/ or 3rd party cloud infrastructure services.
3. Preferred infrastructure platform is Windows 2012 or Windows 2016; although each location has one Windows Server 2008 supporting shared documents. The server hardware is a standard HP ProLiant ML350 G6 with 8 TB.
4. The logical infrastructure should be initiated in Edinburgh as the intermediary link between the many locations.
5. Currently employees share personal computers; this is expected to continue for environmental purposes.
   1. India has 500 desktops in Delhi, Mumbai and Calcutta. Actual users 350 in each location. Server placed in Delhi.
   2. US have 1100 desktops in Birmingham with actual users 1400 and 950 desktops in Washington with actual users 1200. Server placed in Birmingham.
   3. UK has 700 desktops in Edinburgh with actual users 800 and 150 desktops in Wolverhampton with actual users 300. Server placed in Edinburgh.
6. You are advised the solution will be RWEs competitive advantage in the market place. The solution must demonstrate both direct and indirect cost benefits. Apply technologies to provide efficient and effective services with clear operational processes to ensure availability and continuity.
7. The proposal must be presented to the Directors for approval.
