Topic A
Imagine a space alien coming to earth and scientists being able to examine its internal organs.
And suppose nothing resembling the human brain could be found. According to the identity
theory, would this being have a mind? Imagine that its behavior was in most ways
indistinguishable from human behavior. Would you conclude that it had a mind? Why or why
not? Clearly explain and defend your position, using your own words. Use information from the
textbook to help you explain identity theory and the criticisms of identity theory. Make it clear to
your reader why the question about the space alien is an important question for philosophy of
mind.
Topic B
Sartre argues that we make ourselves through our choices. Using the textbook to help you,
describe his argument for this point of view. Is Sartre correct about free will being the main
factor that determines who you are —or do such things as genetics and society have the greater
impact on how you turn out? Describe the reasons to think that genetics and society are more
influential. Is Sartre’s argument for his point-of-view stronger than the arguments against his
view of freedom? Finally, what is your reaction to Sartre’s perspective on freedom? Do you find
his view liberating and inspiring, or do you think it is disheartening and forlorn? Explain.
