Essay Paper:
Plasmodium Vivax
You are required to write a 5 page (minimum) essay paper (not including the title page, abstract or reference page) over a specific internal parasite (fluke, tapeworm, pinworm, roundworm, etc.). This means 5 completely full pages ¾ of a page is not considered a full page. Hence, the entire document will be a minimum of 8 pages. The parasite must live inside the human body thus bed bugs would not be an appropriate parasite. (Google some options if one does not come to mind). Your paper should be typed, in APA format (for help with APA, use link below) https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ or you can also receive help from the CCC tutoring center.
Your essay must include all reputable sources (Wikipedia is not a reputable source), but CDC.gov is. However, 5 of those sources must be primary sources in the form of academic journals. Please be sure to include at least five sentences worth of information, in your own words, of course, from each journal – then properly cite it. For example, you can have 15 reputable sources, but 5 of those 15 reputable sources must be primary sources in the form of academic journals and you must gather 5 sentences of information to use in your essay paper from each journal.
Please use your library CCC credentials to gather these primary sources as these sources will be free to you. If you use GoogleScholar, ProQuest, or JSTOR, those journals may not be free. Do not pay for journals…you can use your CCC credentials and get them for free!
Please make sure your sources are no more than 5 years old.
You are not able to use any quotes in this paper. Everything should be in your own words including the information from all sources. This will be a hard task for some of you, considering the difficulties of changing scientific language… if you have any problems, please use the sources listed above.
Your paper should include the following, in APA format:
Title page and a running head on all pages (in APA format)
Abstract (150 – 250 words) be sure to include keywords as it will not be optional in this paper.
Minimum of 5 pages (introduction, body, and conclusion) including:
o The lifecycle of the parasite in its host(s), including how the parasite is contracted
o The pathophysiology of the disease once in the host
o The epidemiology of the disease (where it is prevalent most, who it affects, etc)
o Signs and symptoms of the host
o Medicines required (if any)
Remember, you need a minimum of 5 primary sources in the form of academic journals. However, you may use as many reputable sources as you need to gather the rest of the information such as CDC, etc.
The grading rubric will be as follows:
– 50% of your grade based on APA format and references (this component is important to learn now as you will be required to write future papers in APA format)
– 50% of your grade based on content and length of paper
You will be required to submit your essay to turnitin. You will find this link in Unit 8.
The reason you need to use turnitin is to prevent plagiarism of your paper. Your plagiarism percentage (or in turnitin – your similarity score) must be below 10% before I will grade it. You are allowed to submit your
paper to turnitin as many times as you need to in order to ensure your plagiarism percentage is 9% or below. Please submit your paper when you are about half way done to see the similarity score, this way, you will know what needs to be fixed as you go along. If you click on the similarity score, it will highlight what has been plagiarized and that will be what you will want to re-word before submitting again… do this as often as possible to ensure your score stays at 9% or less. Please take into consideration, sometimes turnitin has a 24 hour turnaround before you are able to see your plagiarism percentage, so please submit these papers early so you have time to make corrections if needed.
Once you have come up with your parasite, please submit the name to me via the assignment in Unit 4. All you need to do is submit a text statement with the genus and species (Genus species) of your parasite. Once I receive your submission, I will respond to you as to whether or not it is acceptable. There will be one parasite (Genus species) per person, so submit your ideas as early as possible to ensure you get to write over the parasite of your choice.
You must get your parasite approved prior to the due date, please see due dates in the Syllabus’s Course Schedule. Without prior approval from the instructor, I will not grade your paper. There will only 1 parasite species per student, so get your ideas into me early. I will not choose a parasite for you. When you find the one you want to write about, submit both the Genus and species name. For example: Trypanosoma cruzi. Both the Genus and species name should be italicized. Please DO NOT EMAIL your parasite selection to me. I would like to keep track of everything in one place, so please use the Parasite Submission assignment in Unit 4!
The due date for your essay paper can be found in the Syllabus’s Course Schedule. Please remember, it takes at least 24 hours for turnitin to generate a plagiarism (similarity) report so if you must re-submit your paper, work on them early as no late papers will be accepted!
Start finding your primary sources and start writing your paper now! Many, many students start too late and run out of time… or submit at the last minute and have a high plagiarism percentage and end up making a zero. You can technically turn in your paper the 1st day of class so please utilize your time wisely.
******Disclaimer******
If you have taken this class in the past (or have written a paper over a parasite for another class) you WILL need to choose a different Genus and species to write about. Please DO NOT resubmit papers you have submitted in the past (they come back as 100% similarity, which is not acceptable). You will receive no credit for work previously submitted.
If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to email me.
