Comparing & Contrasting Poems
Assignment #2 must consider at least 2 poems from the book. You may compare and contrast poems in their entirety or focus on specific elements only.
Example approaches:
Select two poems on the same theme and discuss the approaches to the theme
Discuss how characters, setting, and tone impact the meaning of two poems on the same theme
Discuss how time, place, and or culture impact meaning
Writing Assignments:
Student must write a 3-page essay from Tracy K. Smith’s American Journal: Fifty Poems for Our Time. Student must include material from the Required Reading and Required Videos.
Topics vary through the different poets and poems. However, student must consider what makes urban poetry particular as described in the course description and Tracy K. Smith’s introduction to American Journal: Fifty Poems for Our Time.
