Case Literature Review Description

You will be asked to write a case literature review based on a violent crime investigation. You need to choose ONE of the following four cases to focus on for your Case Literature Review:

  • Murder of Elizabeth Henry, Brisbane, Queensland

You are expected to choose ONE of these cases, and then produce a report on the case using academic research literature. Your report needs to inform readers about this particular crime type, how this crime relates to others as discussed in the academic research literature, and local statistics on this type of crime. You will be asked to submit a forensic report containing: a brief description of the case you chose, victim characteristics, prevalence and incident characteristics for this type of crime, typical offender characteristics, typical motivations, and caveats.

Your assignment needs to address the following components:

  1. Description of the case: Provide a brief description of the case, providing a salient review of: the victim, what occurred during the crime, the type of crime represented by this offence, and any evidence available.
  2. Victim characteristics: Provides an accurate review of victim characteristics and compare them to typical victim characteristics of crimes of this type.
  3. Prevalence and Rarity/Commonality, & Incident Characteristics: Review statistics on the prevalence of this type of crime in this area and typical incident characteristics, and a brief assessment of how these typical incident characteristics compare to the details of this case.
  4. Typical offender characteristics: Review common offender characteristics in this type of crime, and include a brief assessment of what this means for the characteristics of the offender in this case.
  5. Typical motivations: A brief assessment of the typical motivations in these types of cases, as well as an analysis of what the motivation could be in this case using appropriate motivation typologies from the literature.
  6. Caveats: Provide a review of any limitations of the report drawing on academic literature.

**Remember: YOU ARE NOT WRITING A CRIMINAL PROFILE, BUT A LITERATURE REVIEW WHICH COULD BE USED FOR THEORY BUILDING TO INFORM A PROFILE IN THE FUTURE SHOULD IT BE REQUIRED**. This is also not a literature review in the traditional sense, but a review of academic literature to provide information that is relevant to the forensic report.

**Very Important: There is an assignment template that you should follow in doing your assignment. Please find the template in Word document format attached below.

There is also an assignment guide attached. It is strongly suggested that you read and review this information before you attempt the assignment.

Further Assignment Information:

Word limits

You need to comply with word limits. Word limits encourage conciseness and provide a good indicator of the depth to which you are expected to go. There is a 10% leeway on either side. However, deviations beyond the 10% may be penalised at the discretion of the unit coordinator.

Referencing

In work that is submitted for assessment, any work of others, whether it be a quotation, a summary or a paraphrase, MUST be acknowledged. The acknowledgement must identify the author and publication, and the particular page or paragraph or web sites where relevant.  Quotations must be referenced and identified in quotation marks or, for longer passages, indented as a separate paragraph. Words omitted from the passage should be represented by an ellipsis a series of three periods. Words added should be put in square brackets.

For this assignment you must use APA 6th Referencing Style.  The APA 6th Reference Guide is available at:

Keep this reference guide next to you when you write assignments.

Incorrect referencing will mean you will lose significant marks in your essay and failure to reference may mean referral to the Head of School’s Office. The penalties for plagiarism are severe and the University goes to great lengths to ensure students are aware of the consequences. Where students have doubts as to how to deal with or acknowledge source materials in essays and assignments, they should consult their lecturer or tutor.

TurnItIn

TurnItIn is the software application UNE uses to determine the originality of assessable work submitted by its students. When a file is submitted to TurnItIn, the software compares the text in the submitted files with text from a range of electronic sources including online journals, online databases, the Internet and the TurnItIn database. Any strings of text that occur in both the submitted document and in one or more of the electronic sources are identified by the software with a unique number and colour in what TurnItIn calls the ‘originality report’.  You can submit your assignment to TurnItIn for checking before you submit it for marking. This is an optional step and can occur as many times as you require in order to receive a satisfactory report. Once you are satisfied with your report, you will then submit your assignment for marking.  To access the TurnItIn originality check, go to https://moodle.une.edu.au/mod/page/view.php?id=64673
