1) Read Dracula, Ch. XII, XVI, and XVIII (suggestion: read all of Ch. XII-XVIII).
If you don’t have a physical copy, use this free web version from Project Gutenberg.
If you are skipping some chapters and want to fill yourself in on the plot, Wikipedia has a good summary. (Links to an external site.)
2) Choose a passage (anywhere from 1 paragraph-2 pages in length) that stands out to you, then perform a close reading of that passage (follow steps 1-5 in this guide Actions ).
Identify the passage and where it occurs in the story (chapter, page number if possible, opening words of paragraph), then write 2-3 paragraphs analyzing Stoker’s choices in this passage. Select words or phrases that stand out to you: what kind of tone does Stoker create here? Do we realize something about a character or characters?
