Requirements for paper:

1. At least 4 typewritten pages and not more than 8. Failure to write papers of 4-8 pages will result in the

loss of one letter grade.  This number excludes the works cited page.

 

2. Must follow MLA parenthetical documentation

 

3. Read the novel and write a paper which addresses how three literary tools develop the theme of the

novel.

 

4. Don’t use bold print on your paper. You must type your paper using Microsoft Word. Use 12 point

Times New Roman font and double space.

 

Preparation of preliminary bibliography:

 

1. Contains at least 5 cited sources which must include the following: one periodical (journal, magazine, or

newspaper), one computer source, one book, and two other sources of your choice.  Your computer

sources cannot be Wikipedia and must be reputable sources with an author’s name given.  Do not

use Spark Notes, Cliff Notes, Schmoop, enotes, Pink Monkey, Blogs, or anything like these as

sources.

 

2. All of your sources must be okayed by the instructor.

 

3. Each source cited should be entered on the Works Cited page. Please be very careful and selective when

choosing sources from the internet. Many internet sites are not published by reputable sources.

Wikipedia, for example, is not a scholarly source because anyone can submit to it. I will count off on

your research paper if you use non-scholarly sources. (If it has a name like anti-study or mega essays,

common sense should tell you it is not a scholarly site.)The Alabama Virtual Library is a great place to

find scholarly source material.  Also, you are not allowed to use Blogs, Spark Notes, Cliff Notes,

ENotes, or anything like these sources.  If you have questions regarding the reliability of any source,

please contact me. Early in the semester, you will be required to turn in a preliminary bibliography.  The

purpose of this is to let me check your sources before you get too far along with the paper.

Guidelines for American Literature Research Paper

 

Write a 4-8 page paper which analyzes the literary tools (setting, conflict development, characterization, mood,

irony, symbolism, point of view, etc.) the author used in writing the novel you have chosen.  Decide which three

tools have most influenced the novel’s theme. The research paper will be an explanation of how each of these various

tools develop the theme of the novel. Consider the relevant tools paragraph by paragraph from least to most important.

Requirements for paper:

• Your paper must include at least 5 sources

.

• Be sure to use the sources listed on page one of this document.
• Your paper should include a works cited page and proper MLA documentation within

the text.

• The paper must be 4-8 typed pages and must follow MLA documentation. Papers must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document
