For the first essay assignment in this class, you will choose an aspect of one of the following topics and write a small research paper on it to correlate with the following: Describe and interpret interactions among early European powers, Native Americans and the process of colonization including the development of early forms of governance. (What this means is that in some way whatever topic you choose should be about either early European powers in the Americas, interactions between Native Americans and early Europeans, or the first colonization efforts in the Americas and the early forms of governance used).

This paper is not an overall or all-encompassing paper. You are to choose a particular aspect within your choice of topic. Some examples are people, places, events, religion, rights, etc. More specific examples are a paper on the rights or roles of women in a particular colony of North America or the difference between royal, proprietary, and charter colonial governments. The specifics of the paper are listed below:
3-4 pages in length, typed & double-spaced
12 point font with Times New Roman preferred
At least 1 primary source and 2 OTHER sources (scholarly secondary sources) for at least 3 sources total
Endnotes to be used in the format shown in class (see handout on BLACKBOARD)
