Unit title & code | Psychology Honours Project (PSY024-, PSY027-3, PSY028-3) |
Assignment number and title | Assignment 1: Ethics proposal |
Assignment type | Proposal |
Weighting of assignment | 0% |
Size or length of assessment | There is no overall word count. Guidance is provided on the ethics proposal template. |
Unit learning outcomes | On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the underpinnings of conducting psychological research to accredited professional standards. 2. Initiate, design, conduct and report an empirically-based research project under supervision in psychology, and critically reflect on your university career and CV. |
What am I required to do in this assignment? |
The first assessment is your ethics application which is a proposal of what you plan to do for your study, with a detailed method section and the ethical issues in your honours project, along with a timetable. Your ethics application must be agreed with your supervisor before submission. This will be submitted to the Psychology Ethics Committee or a subset of the Committee for ethical approval.
Please note that this assessment is marked on a pass/fail basis. Therefore, you cannot go ahead with your research project until the assessment has been passed and it has received formal ethical approval. If you do so you will fail this unit. Due to the need to pass this assessment before undertaking data collection, referrals for this assessment will take place in the academic year (in-year referral), rather than during the August referral period.
If you are doing an empirical study – You must include an information form, consent form and debrief form, with appropriate details provided relevant to your study. If you plan to work with any external organisation, a letter indicating approval should be included with your research proposal submission.
For more detail on what to include, attend the unit lectures and read the ethics application template carefully. |
What do I need to do to pass? (Threshold Expectations from UIF) |
Provide a critical evaluation of a contemporary research topic in psychology and outline a workable research proposal to further investigate this topic. Ensure written expression is clear and the argument has some structure showing evidence of analytical thinking. Demonstrate a clear understanding of the ethical dimension of your research in both written work and in practice. |
How do I produce high quality work that merits a good grade? |
There is no grade assigned. It is a pass or fail. Your likelihood of passing is improved by:
1: Communicating regularly with your supervisor and discussing your plans 2: Reading widely in your chosen topic, with particular attention to methods used 3: Ensure you are familiar with British Psychological Society guidelines on research ethics, and address key principles including (but not limited to) ensuring informed consent, protecting confidentiality, and scientific integrity. 4: Explaining clearly how you will implement best ethical practice |
How does this assignment relate to what we are doing in scheduled sessions? |
The first lectures in the unit will focus on how to complete the ethics application. |
How will my assignment be marked? |
Your assignment will be marked according to the threshold expectations and the criteria on the following page.
You can use them to evaluate your own work and consider your grade before you submit. |
