Explore the issue of gender and sexuality in the media. When sexuality is used to sell a product, certain attitudes towards sex are also ‘sold’ to the consumer. Keeping in mind that we learn sex and gender norms and behaviors from the media, as well as other socializing agents, look at how men and women appear in advertisements.
How is sex and gender used to promote or sell products?
What are the popular stereotypes that many of these ads are appealing to?
What are some of the typical ways that men and women are portrayed in the ads?
What are the underlying messages being sold to us and what are the broader implications of such gendered advertisement?
And finally, can (or should) family mediate the effects that use of sex in the media has on children, teenagers, and young adults?
In your discussion posting, please make sure to briefly describe one of the advertisements in some detail and then discuss the topic of sexuality, gender and the media.
