The parenting styles proposed by Diana Baumrind and other researchers are a popular way of trying to understand how parents relate to their children, in terms of communication to/from, warmth, expectations for maturity, and discipline. Parenting styles often adapt with time, circumstances, gender of the child, and generation. In this assignment, students will consider the parenting styles of their own parents, parents of a friend or family member, OR of a celebrity, to determine their parenting styles and their children’s outcomes that may relate to how they were parented.
Assignment:
1. Read pp. 202 – 208 “Challenges for Caregivers” about styles of caregiving and discipline in chapter six of your textbook
2. Watch the related video “Development: Parenting Styles.”
3. Study the Chapter 6 Power Point Slide Presentation slides about Parenting Styles.
4. Start a New Discussion Thread with a Post that answers the following questions about EITHER your own parents, parents of a friend or family member, OR parents of a celebrity that you’re familiar with:
Overall, which of the four parenting styles do these parents fit into? How would you evaluate them in terms of communication to/from their child(ren), warmth, expectations for maturity, and discipline? If there are two parents involved, do they both fit into the same parenting style? Did their parenting styles change as their child(ren) aged or as brothers and sisters were added? Did their parenting style differ with their different children, if any? What behaviors do you see in the children (or adult children) of these parents that you think can be attributed, at least in part, to the parenting style that they were raised with?
