They must be between 500 to 750 words, excluding the bibliography, and include a word count. Papers proposals should have a thesis statement that responds to one of the essay questions below and be backed by a consideration of peer-reviewed scholarly research. The thesis statement is typically a one to two sentence summation of your response (argument) that is included in the first paragraph of the paper.
Be explicit: the reader should be clear on what you are arguing. They must include an introduction and an overview of the argument you intend to make while also acknowledging and responding to counterarguments. This both demonstrates that you have done your research – and are thus aware of the range of perspectives on the topic –and ultimately makes for a more thorough and convincing analysis.
The paper proposal must make use of a minimum of five peer-reviewed academic sources, not
including textbook sources or required readings for the course. Papers should include citations
formatted using The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th Edition (either author-date or notesbibliography style).
