Week 2 Discussion This week I posted an article about a woman who thinks she became ill after touching a stray cat. Personally, I don’t think she got the bacteria from touching the cat but, rather, from eating contaminated food. The fact she only eats fish doesn’t mean she could not get the bacteria from eating contaminated food (cross contamination is very common in kitchens: how many times have you seen people put raw hamburger patties on a cutting board and then slice their salad on the same board?). We have seen lots of cases of vegetarians getting sick from E. coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter, etc. Please answer the following:
1. Have you ever suffered from food borne illness? If so, tell us if you know for certain what made you sick.
2. What subset of the population do you think is most susceptible to suffering serious health problems from foodborne illness?
3. What do you think are some ways to prevent foodborne illness?
4. Did you call the Health Department in the locality where you purchased the food to report your foodborne illness?
5. Did you go to see a Doctor and, if so, were you tested for any specific viruses, bacteria, and/or protozoa?
