ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION: For this task, you will work with a partner to make an informational brochure for parents. You will choose one misconception from a list (below) of provided examples of typical parents’ concerns regarding their child’s cognitive development, and write an informative brochure to identify the myth, dispel any misconceptions, and provide tips. This is an applied activity that requires students to translate complex textbook and module materials, into useable information. There are three primary goals of the brochure: (1) to address a common misconception (from the topics provided), (2) provide parent-friendly information dispelling or debunking the misconception using course content, and (3) give tips for parents to support development in the area.
Getting started–Below are a set of suggested steps to help you get started and move forward in completing the brochure with your partner.
Step 1–Find your partner in the discussion area (your instructor will let you know when the partners have been assigned, and the discussion area set up), and decide how/where/when you will collaborate on the assignment.
Step 2–With your partner, choose a topic and scenario on which the misconception is demonstrated (see list to below). Discuss a possible approach to, and division of, work. Identify with your partner what specifically, the misconception in the scenario is –what does the parent not understand about cognitive development? What could they understand better?
Step 3–Reread the chapter and module in detail, making notes on anything that you think relates to “debunking” the misconception for parents. The goal is not to present the entire topics’ content in the brochure, rather only the parts that are relevant to the misconception.
Step 4–Design your brochure using a template. There are templates to choose from in Word, and there are many available on the Internet. Or feel free to create your own!
Step 5–Write your content using simple, parent-friendly language and a thoughtful format. Be sure to include all of the required sections (see below). Use visuals where appropriate to support the communication of ideas. Your brochure should be visually appealing but also effective in its communication of information (e.g., use of bulleted points instead of text-heavy paragraphs).
Step 6–Prepare your reference list of the information sources you used as a separate, additional document. You may only use the readings from the course or modules notes for information.
