Sample Answer:
The Opium War (first one)
The Opium War took place 1839-1842 and was fought between China and the Great Britain. The war began after the emperor sent Lin Zexu to Canton to deal with the opium crisis plaguing China and he destroyed about 3,000,000 pounds of British opium. England declared war on China and easily won because England had industrialized and China had not. The war ended with the Treaty of Nanjing, which was the first unequal treaty and damaging to China’s economy, prestige, and sovereignty. The war is historically significant because 1) it exemplifies the” reversal of history” brought about by the Industrial Revolution, and 2) China’s loss in the war began to significantly weaken the Qing Dynasty.
