Your film review should be targeted to a general public audience. It should be engaging and interesti ng to read! This is not a formal acade mic paper, but rather a review like the ones you might fi nd at onlin e movie sites written by passionate movie buffs and professional film reviewers. (example from Rottentomatoes.com – http s://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/citizen_kane)
Start off with a good ‘hook’, such as a strong opening sentence, to get the reader engaged. Explain why you liked the movie, or did not like it, and give at least 2 examples from the work supporting your opinions. Do NOT simply recount the plot of the film – do dig deeper into the subtext and formal elements (cinematography, editing, mise -en-scene, lighting , music, etc). Some possibilities to explore (just suggestions, take ‘em or leave ‘em and /or come up with your own):
•Tie in the broader social themes and messages that the work is addressing; is it successful in its approach?
•Where does the film sit historically; what was going on in terms of class, race and economic situa tio ns of the times.
•What’s the filmmaker’s approach to documentary – how do they use this style to get the message across?
