TASK 1
With the use of diagrams, describe the slenderness ratio and the effective length of a column. Give references where necessary, especially in the use of illustrations and diagrams
Determine whether the reinforced concrete column cross-section shown below would be suitable to resist an axial load of 1750kN. Assume that the design compressive strengths of the concrete 20N/mm2 and steel reinforcement are 375 N/mm2 respectively.
The client has considered the following materials: Timber, Reinforced Concrete and Structural Steel. Provide an analysis of each material of their:
LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY,
SIZE,
WEIGHT and
CORROSION RESISTANCE
TASK 2
The loaded beam below has been analysed and the moments and shear forces determined. The client requires a reinforced concrete beam to be used. Produce a detail design for an RC beam according to Eurocode 2.
Give a detailed design of the beam according to Eurocode 2
Give a detailed design for the Column according to Eurocode 2
Produce drawings to support your detail design given for the reinforced concrete beams and columns. Your design should give details of the reinforcement’s specifications.
TASK 3
The client is looking at using another material apart from structural steel or reinforced concrete. Evaluate the use of timber in achieving a design solution; discussing the benefits or challenges associated with using timber in design.
Building Information Modelling is seen as the sustainable solution in design. Provide a report assessing the use of Building Information Modelling in the production of accurate structural design information and the collaborative environment of structural design.
