What is art? We start this course at the time of the Renaissance, which most of is consider to be a time when Western European Art flourished and reinvented itself, setting the standard for what we consider to be ‘art’ today, at least in “the West” . But for many of us, the definition of ‘art’ has expanded. How was ‘art’ defined in the Renaissance? How and why were women constrained artistically or were they? Have we, today, redefined ‘art’ to the point that we recognize that women were as artistic as men during the Renaissance? If not, why not? If so – how have we done this?
