I am afraid I have run into a bit of trouble with my business, however.
As you know we’re big in the craft spirits business. Last Autumn, Edith and I took a long vacation in South America. While I was there, I learned about this amazing fruit that has only recently been discovered in the Guiana Highlands in Venezuela: the possilberry. They are amazing – the perfect balance of sweet and tart. I decided that this was the perfect base for our new flavoured gin.
We have invested a lot in the production of this new gin, and I have purchased 125 tonnes of possilberries for manufacture. We have just received word, however, that the European Commission has decided to slap a massive import duty on possilberries. With this new duty the raw materials are simply too expensive. Not only will we not make any profit on the product, the money we’ve sunk into it so far will have been completely wasted.
We’re pretty sure we’re the EU’s only importer of possilberries at present, and this has a real impact on us. The Commission hasn’t consulted on this decision at all. They’ve given us zero notice, and they haven’t explained why they’re imposing this tariff.
Is there any way we can get this decision overturned?
