Youth Participation and Identity
• issues related to the challenges for youth themselves, in terms of their identity formation and participation in society preparing for adulthood;
• the ideological perceptions of youth by the adult world, or external environment. (schools, youth setting, or policy makers)
The numbered sections, below, are designed to help you structure your response. Look at reading from each week and the Talis plug in to support you. Each week we have looked at topics and developed the discussion around the challenges of being a youth and how sub-cultures and different variables that intersect within the discourse help to explain and justify claims about some the issues that relate to the experience of being a young person in society, the opportunities and challenges faced.
1. Drawing on the evidence of your reading, with examples to support, in what ways do narratives of youth depicted support to explain the concept of youth and introduce the discourse? Why are young people seen as problematic? (approx. 750 words)
2. Looking at key areas within the discourse, and with reference to relevant literature, present some of the issues faced when looking at youth identities and participation in society. How do schools, or youth settings, contribute to the issues or questions raised? Think about sub-cultures, intersectionality and theoretical perspective offered. (approx. 2000 words)
3. Given some of the claims made in the literature and the evidence of practice, what implications may there be for education, as a result? What are your impressions and understanding about the key arguments you have engaged with ?(approx. 750 words)
