Listen to the Chapter 7 Spotify tracks 19, 23, 25, and 26 (see embedded playlist below). Write an essay two paragraphs long (200-250 words each) analyzing these tracks in a critical, objective way. These tracks are gamelan/western “hybrid” compositions, meaning they combine musical elements found in both traditions. Here are some questions you might answer in your writing: What do these compositions tell us about musical adaptability in both traditions? Do you think that an Indonesian musician’s interest in Western music can be tied with the national concept of Unity in Diversity? If the group is favored over the individual in Indonesian society, is the solo work and hybrids of I Wayan Balawan (pg. 112, PL 7-25) respectful to his culture and that from which he borrows? Explain. Do you find this “hybrid” style more effective than either original one? Do you think that this sort of borrowing from one tradition for insertion in another is respectful or valid? Would a better term be “fusion”? If so, would the outcome be more respectful?
