Write your initial post in your own words; do not quote or copy from sources-Write with formal, professional language, as explained in the reading.

Unit 1 Discussion

This unit’s reading includes a list of reasons why writing matters as well as information about formal writing. After reading this, take some time to contemplate the importance of these concepts in securing a job.

Your initial post must include the following:

  • In your first paragraph, consider that you are an employer seeking to hire someone. There are only two applicants whose IT skills and credentials seem equal, but one provided a large project document (in a portfolio) with many grammar errors and an informal style that seems inappropriate. You have decided to hire the person whose application materials were all well written. Justify why this was an appropriate decision and what could happen if an employee consistently makes errors.
  • In your second paragraph, write about your comfort level and experiences in writing in a formal style.
  • Do not use source material for this discussion; use your critical thinking skills.

In responses to others, it would be appropriate to share experiences with writing resumes, cover letters, and/or portfolio documents, either from the applicant or the employer’s viewpoint, or explain other instances in your career so far that required formal writing.

Discussion parameters:

  • Write your initial post in your own words; do not quote or copy from sources.
  • Do not copy the questions into your post.
  • Write an original descriptive subject line for your initial post (do not include the unit number or your name).
  • Write with formal, professional language, as explained in the reading.
  • Work to meet all posting guidelines and expectations.
