Haemoglobin oxygen equilibrium curve – Bohr effect
critically analyze a set of data.
• observe the effects of differing partial pressures of oxygen on haemoglobin oxygen
saturation.
• assess the effects of differing partial pressures of carbon dioxide on the ability of
oxygen to bind to haemoglobin.
• develop an understanding of the physiological significance of the Bohr effect.
• consider the importance of buffers (carbonic acid-bicarbonate) in the blood, and
describe their function in acid-base balance.
• compile and present the appropriate information for a Discussion section of a
scientific manuscript.
o become aware of the conventions of scientific writing.
o become aware (i.e. metacognition) of their individual writing process and
improve writing through revision based upon formative feedback.
o practice writing clearly, concisely, and precisely.

Carefully read the materials in the Pre-lab 2 manual and this Pre-lab 2 assignment or this assignment, at the minimum, you should include the following (not necessarily in
this order)*:
1. State whether your results support your hypothesis/purpose.
– Were they expected and why?
2. Briefly review the most important findings (in order of importance).
– Emphasize what is important, new, or different
– Present results both within species and between species
– Comment on PCO2 = 40 mmHg and PCO2 = 80 mmHg
3. Explanations and speculations of your findings, both expected and unexpected.
– Focus on one for expected findings and one for unexpected findings.
4. What is a physiological explanation for your results?
5. What is a physiological implication/consequence of your findings OR how might
this affect the animal during its daily activities. Consider relating to the Bohr effect.
6. Were there any limitations to the study?
– Note that this does not refer to # of replicates or human error etc.
7. Suggest appropriate future studies leading on from your findings or your
limitations.
3 BIO271 Pre-lab 2 assignment 2023
– Focus on one only.
8. Conclusions
– What is significant about your study?
