You will select a current event or issue (in the news within the last year) that has to do (either overtly or covertly) with gender, sex, sexuality, race, ethnicity, nation, national identity. Select at least three different English-language news media pieces (can be print, internet, TV, radio) that cover the event or issue, from a range of sources representing different viewpoints.
Craft an argument that addresses how gender, sex, and/or sexuality interact with other structures of difference in the unfolding of the event or the development of the issue. If applicable, you may also analyze how these norms are contested and resisted in your current event. Be sure to analyze any ways in which the language of the news article conveys common assumptions about gender and/or sexuality.
1.6-8 page paper in which you briefly summarize the issue or event.
2. A short annotated bibliography in which you briefly describe and summarize 3 of the media pieces (~100 words each entry) you used.
3. Analyze this event from intersectional feminist viewpoint to show how gender, race, nationality, and other variables intersect in social norms that reinforce inequality and oppression. If applicable, you may also analyze how these norms are contested and resisted in your current event. Be sure to analyze any ways in which the language of the news coverage conveys common assumptions about gender and/or sexuality.
